About Me and My Guitar

I grew up in East Yorkshire and have been playing the guitar since I was about 8 years old. During my school years I was a member of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble and played at venues all over the country. As well as various school bands, I also played electric guitar and keyboard in a touring progressive-rock band with Neil Brocklebank, a York-based guitarist. I divided my time completing the classical guitar grades and diploma, whilst trying to “shred” on the electric guitar. Both had there uses!

My tutors during this time included Dave Jones (Hull), John Tomkins (Hull), and Peter Batchelar (Huddersfield). It was Peter’s recommendation that I play for Gordon Crosskey at a masterclass at Chetham’s School of Music and it was this meeting that inspired me to think about continuing the classical guitar at a higher level.

When I decided to fully pursue music as a career, I chose to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. As a rather naive student, I was amazed at how much talent there was around me. I spent 5 years there gaining both my BMus(Hons) with 1st and my Masters MMus with Distinction. The guitar tutors were the fantastic Gordon Crosskey and Craig Ogden. During my time there I took part in masterclasses with Gary Ryan, Mark Eden and Ricardo Iznaola. I was also lucky enough to play for Julian Bream during an audition where I was awarded a Musician’s Benelovent Fund Award to help fund my post-graduate study.

The RNCM was a fantastic experience and I got to work in many different ensembles, on several different guitar-shaped instruments. To summarize a few of the key performances:

  • Solo classical guitar recitals for:  Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Midday Music, Liverpool Hope University, European Guitar Teacher’s Association, Rising Stars Concert at the Bridgewater Hall, St. Anne’s Lunchtime Concert Series, RNCM Gold Medal Weekend, RNCM Strings day solo recital, William Walton tribute concert
  • Electric guitar performances: RNCM big band with Gwilym Simcock, several orchestral engagements
  • Classical guitar quartets at the annual RNCM guitar concert and the yearly massed guitar ensemble
  • Misc: playing Mandolin accompanying two singers during the Mozart Festival, recording an ancient Mandolin for the RNCM archives, playing banjo with a dixieland group, acoustic guitar duo with Callum Dewar at Chadlington Festival

Since graduating from the RNCM I have been busy in theater work, working on many shows including Company at the Sheffield Lyceum, Billy Elliot, Best Little Wh#*#House in Texas (!), Grease, Hairspray and many more.

I have also played orchestral guitar with the Liverpool Philharmonic and the Manchester Camerata. As a soloist, I have worked with the Hull Philharmonic at the Classics in the Park Festival, and the Isle of Axholm Orchestra, performing Walton’s 5 Bagatelles. I have also joined two function bands, the Grand Central Function Band and the Bloomsbury Band.

As a corporate and wedding guitarist I have worked in venues all over the country, including a fantastic gig at Claridge’s in London, and a wonderful tree-house venue in Alnwick. My clients have included the NSPCC, corporate banks in Manchester, the Lowry, and several restaurants.

Hopefully you can see that I love all sides to the guitar in all styles, and enjoy performing in as many wide ranging situations as possible.
